Sepaktakraw - Rules

Sepaktakraw players at full tilt Sepaktakraw - Rules Players have a maximum of three touches to 'score'

'Regu' is a Malaysian word for team. In formal competition, there are three kinds of sepaktakraw events: regu, doubles and team.

  • Regu event: Each regu event consists of three players plus two substitutes per team.
  • Team event: Each team event consists of a squad of three different regu (a total of nine players) plus three substitutes per team.
  • Double event: In the double event, each double regu consists of two players plus one substitute per team.

Regu and team event

The "feeder" or "striker" will toss the ball to the "server" and he has to keep one foot in the circle while kicking the ball over. A point is awarded even if the ball touches the net and lands within the court. The regu will continue to serve each time they win a point.

Only three players from each side are allowed on court during play but a substitution can be called anytime during the game. Once a substitution is made, no further substitutions are allowed for the duration of the game.

In the team competition, the play is the same but each team is allowed three regus for a total squad of 12 players. The first regu of each team will play a three-set game and the winning regu earns a point for its team.

The second regu of each team then play and the winner of this second game will earn a point for its team. If the same team wins the first two second regu games, then there is no need for a tie-breaking third game.

Double event

A match is played by two regu, each consisting of two players. One of the two players of the serving regu are at the back, positioned behind the baseline for the service kick, for which he also acts as the thrower from any position along and behind the baseline, and he is called a tekong.

The other non-serving player, also known as "alternate tekong" of the serving regu as well as the players of the receiving regu are positioned within their respective courts.

Players of the serving regu will alternate as tekong each time it has won a point from the previous serve until the receiving team manages to gain a point.

Only two players from each side are allowed on court during play but a substitution can be called anytime during the game. There are no limits of substitution for the duration of the game.

Scoring system

A point is awarded once the regu hits the ball in bound that the opponent cannot return within three touches or when the opponent hits the ball that lands out of bounds untouched. Either side can score a point on any serve; however, the regu who wins a point gets the next serve.

When either serving side or receiving side commits a fault, a point is awarded to the opposing side that then makes the next service. A game consists of two sets. The winning point for a set is 21 points, unless the point is tied at 20-20, the set shall be decided on a difference of two points up to a ceiling of 25 points.

If each regu wins one set, the game shall be decided in the third set; called "tie break", with 15 points unless the point is tied at 14-14, then the set shall be decided on a difference of two points, up to a ceiling of 17 points.
